As we welcome spring, especially with weather that foretold its existence for weeks now, I’d like to welcome everyone to our FVJN seder table.  Passover seders, in keeping with the age-old Jewish tradition, are perfect opportunities to open your homes to others.  While these wonderful meals and experiences are often shared with family, we all too often miss the opportunity to also share them with friends.  

 

In communities such as ours, where Judaism is a minority religion and many customs are unfamiliar, the simple act of asking a neighbor or friend to join you for dinner, and your approach to a seder, could provide invaluable insight and friendship.  

 

As an extension of the learning and community aspects of the meal, please join us for a learning/teaching model seder which will be part of the FVJSchool programming on April 1st starting at 9:30am.  

 

While obviously not a ‘real’ seder in terms of timing or content, we hope that this model seder will inspire attendees to present their own seders in their homes over Passover, and to potentially think about whom they can help educate or welcome into their home along the way.  

 

FVJN is fortunate to have so many warm and welcoming members, and as we grow our own FVJN community, our family seders may well help to engage and enhance our community with others.

Experience a Model Seder with Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors
Swarms of locusts, hail storms, promises broken, waters parted… these are just some of the highlights of the Passover story which children will hear during the upcoming model seder during religious school on Sunday, April 1, at Fox Valley Jewish School (FVJS).

 

Want to hear more? Anyone wishing to learn and experience a bit of what Passover seder is all about is welcome to attend, along with the students and parents of this school run by Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors (FVJN), in downtown Geneva.

 

In Jewish schools and synagogues around the world, children sit down and participate in what is called a “model seder”. The idea behind the model seder is to provide a simulation of the family seder that will allow students to learn about the parts of and participate and understand the whole seder at home. For children whose families do not participate in a seder, it provides an opportunity to experience this particular Jewish ceremony. Participants also further develop their personal connections to the traditions of the Jewish people.

 

The FVJS model seder will be held on Sunday, April 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. FVJN is located at 121 S. Third St. in Geneva. People interested in attending the model seder should RSVP right away to: Rachely@fvjn.org, in order for the school to prepare for all who come.

 

Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors (FVJN) is a nonprofit community group composed of Jewish individuals and interfaith families located in central Kane County and nearby towns. The goal of this group is to develop a cohesive Jewish community in the Fox Valley area for religious, charitable and educational purposes.

This month we finished Kosher Chinese in which Michael Levy told  of his
fascinating experience during two years in rural China as a teacher with the
Peace Corps. Participation in the Book Club is free and open to all.
